Among the attractions in the town is the Adams Hall mutiny, which took place on the night of 23-24 June 1943. The mutiny began over a trivial matter. When the mutiny started, the two white soldiers were sent back to their own bar, which was where the trouble started.

The police were forced to call in the military and order the rioters to disperse. The incident was the first time that the American army was in the United Kingdom. During World War II, the military police were tasked with controlling the city’s black population. Despite the riot, the black troops were well-protected. During World War II, the blacks were segregated and were armed with machine guns.
